Student Leadership Competencies® were developed from five years of research conducted by Dr. Corey Seemiller, who analyzed leadership training outcomes in all 522 accredited academic programs in higher education. The result was 60 competencies to comprehensively describe the practice of leadership.
What are competencies?
Competencies are knowledge, values, abilities, and behaviors.
- Knowledge: One's understanding of a competency and how it is defined.
- Values: The value one places on a competency.
- Ability: One's internal motivation and skill to engage in a certain behavior.
- Behavior: One's engagement in a certain behavior.
How do we use them?
The Student Involvement and Leadership Center's leadership programs team uses the Student Leadership Competencies® to develop, categorize, and assess our workshops, leadership certificates, custom leadership facilitations, and more.
By utilizing these competencies, we ensure quality, comprehensive, and engaging programs to create inclusive, purpose-driven leaders.
